Bach: Organ Chorales from the Neumeister Collection – Urtext Edition
Long unknown, the Neumeister Collection significantly expanded our knowledge of Johann Sebastian Bach’s early organ music. Brought to light at Yale University in 1985 by musicologist Christoph Wolff, the manuscript compiled by Johann Gottfried Neumeister contains 82 chorale preludes, including numerous compositions attributed to Bach.
These early works already display remarkable stylistic variety. Chorale fantasias, fugues, fughettas, imitative movements and concise settings based directly on hymn melodies reflect the influence of the North German organ tradition while revealing the emerging musical personality of the young Bach. The collection offers a fascinating insight into the development of a style that would later reach its full maturity in Bach’s major organ works.
Edited by Christoph Wolff, this 2018 Bärenreiter Urtext edition is an updated version of Series IV, Volume 9 of the New Bach Edition. It incorporates corrections to the musical text, a newly added concordance, a detailed preface, information about the chorale melodies and an alphabetical index. Links also provide direct access to the corresponding manuscript pages on Bach digital.
This 77-page volume is a valuable resource for organists, church musicians, students and teachers. The chorales are suitable for worship, teaching, stylistic study and recital programmes, making the collection an important complement to Bach’s better-known organ works.
