The Yamaha P-S500 is compatible with the Smart Pianist app, which can be installed on a cell phone or pad. Once this is connected to the instrument, the player has access to a variety of different control functions and the instrument's setting options. There are also a number of functions that make learning and playing even more enjoyable. In addition, the app can create sheet music for the accompaniment from the songs stored on the device. This makes it even easier to learn favorite songs.

The learning path is made much easier by the Stream Light function. Red and blue lights above each key show which keys to play and when. This unique feature makes it possible to play even without reading music. All players can look forward to two world-class concert grand piano sounds: the best Yamaha concert grand piano, the CFX, and the famous Bösendorfer Imperial from Vienna. The P-S500 is equipped with Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM), which virtually recreates the typical vibrations and resonances of a classical piano. In this process, Virtual Resonance Modeling calculates the position of each of the instrument's 88 notes in real time, guaranteeing an incomparably realistic and complex sound. The Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) keyboard with 88 weighted keys creates additional playing pleasure and thus ensures an authentic playing feel.
