Cilea Sonate op 38

Francesco Cilea, often associated with the Giovane Scuola Italiana and operatic verismo, is characterized by a particularly elegant and subtle style. In addition to his well-known operatic works, Cilea also left behind a remarkable number of instrumental compositions, among which the sonata for violoncello and piano occupies a prominent position.

The sonata was composed in 1888, published in 1901 and revised in 1947. Today it is considered a fundamental work in the Italian chamber music repertoire. Thanks to Giacomo Fossa's careful, musicologically sound new edition, this composition is now once again available in a version that impressively brings out the depth of expression and stylistic elegance of the music.
