Composer, organist, conductor and pedagogue Richard Faltin (1835-1918)
was in his day a leading figure on the Finnish musical scene. Born in
Germany, he was granted Finnish citizenship in 1869 and is remembered
today above all as a composer of church and choral music. He did,
however, contribute to Finnish musical life in many other ways, too,
at a time when it was becoming firmly established in the latter half
of the 19th century.
Most of the 16 solo songs composed by Richard Faltin between 1856 and
1898 are folk-like and playful in style. The importance of the present
edition is further enhanced by the inclusion of six songs from the
first two cycles found in the Richard Faltin Archive of the Finnish
National Library and now published for the first time.
